Just because you’re a Cop Doesn’t Mean it’s Okay…
Just yesterday the case against two University of Maryland students who were accused of attacking a police officer after a basketball game was dropped. Thank God for video footage right? There happen to be a video recording by another student at the time of the attack. A University of Maryland student was just skipping down the street after a victory of the basketball game when a few officers attacked him and allegedly beat him to the ground. In a sworn statement, county police officer Sean McAleavey said McKenna and Donat (the two boys involved) "struck" other officers and their horses, "causing minor injuries." Clearly, the video says otherwise.
"The video shows the charging documents were nothing more than a cover, a fairy tale they made up to cover for the officers' misconduct," Christopher Griffiths, one of the students' lawyers, told The Washington Post. "The video shows gratuitous violence against a defenseless individual." After watching that video I was disgusted. I could not honestly believe that police officers think they can get away with things like this. I hope they all get fired and spend some time in prison.
I think this all ties into the internet aspect because that video was first posted online. If no one had saw that video, no one would have believed those two kids and it would have been a battle of the “he said, she said.” The video footage saved those two kids whether people believe it or not and thanks to the internet, now everyone around the world can see what losers those cops are and maybe it will send a message out to the rest of the Police Departments as well.
"I'm outraged and disappointed after viewing the video," Prince George's County Police Chief Roberto Hylton told the Post. "That's not the type of professional conduct we promote. Any employee who uses excessive force will be held accountable." Personally, I don’t think it should have ever happened in the first place. They should be doing things within their departments to make sure that their officers do not behave that way.

I could believe, I think some police are CRAZY! (please don't beat me officer, I only speak the truth). I'm glad it was caught on tape, because these people think they have all of this authority when they put on the suit, and have their gun and nightstick in hand, but they're nuts. And another greeeat thing about this is that with footage such as this, it would spread around the Internet like wildfire. People think these guys are always in the right, they're the authority, which means what they say is golden, but they're a*holes in my eyes. No offense to any one who is a cop, knows a cop, but, I mean, I'm sure you've all run into a bad cop once in your life. They're the pits, obviously for these kids, it shows.
ReplyDeleteHeather! Wow. This is the best blog I've ever read! Your my hero! I wish I could blog like you! Na Naa Kiding...anyway on a serious note, this is crazy! I can't believe policemen would to this to an innocent man. Like come on here, just because you have a badge doesn't make you have the right to beat up anyone or to treat anyone like that. I couldn't even imagine watching this in person, it was hard to watch it in video.
ReplyDeleteHeather I did this weeks blog on an internet video that got alot of hits this past week and how it got alot of attention and exposure. People def. go around and see different videos on youtube or other video based websites. Its unfortunate that this happened to an innocent man but it just goes to show you how people will be willing to watch things that are posted on the internet.
ReplyDeleteThis is absolutly crazy! I hate how cops think they can do whatever they want and get away with it, those little bastards! They are suppose to be enforcing the law and stopping violence but instead the are provoking it! What is wrong with them? Thank goodness for the internet or else those cops would have gotten away with it. People would believe cops over kids anyday, so if it was a he said, he said situation, the kids would have lost. The video is intense. I hate seeing fights it makes me so sad! But I'm glad the cops are now being punished for it, good they deserve every bit comming to them.
ReplyDeleteI heard about this story. Some people think they can do whatever they want. it's a good thing for technology and that someone was there as a witness and videotaped it as well as posted it online. Otherwise, i'm sure these cops would have gotten away with it.
ReplyDeleteJust because some police officers are corrupt doesn't mean that all of them are therefore I think it is important to point out that not all of them are like this (with my brother in the NYPD and my dad and FBI agent, i feel obligated to defend!!) ha. However the ones that are like this are disgusting and should have their badges revoked. It just shows how much technology can become apart of our lives, with this case..a major piece of evidence proving the truth! YouTube helped out with a crime investigation, pretty cool...who would have ever thought?
